Safety Tips for cooking with kids
 in the kitchen

Always wash your hands before you begin, tie back long hair and cover clothing with an apron or an old shirt.

Install a fire extinguisher and fire blanket in the kitchen and familiarise yourself with their operation.

Have children stand at the level of activity, use a stool if necessary so they are not reaching up where they cannot see.

Supervise children closely if the recipe requires the use of sharp knives, electrical appliances or the stove/oven.

Always turn pot handles in toward the back of the stovetop. This way no one can bump into them and knock the pot over.

Keep paper towels, dish towels and pot holders away from the stove top so they don't catch on fire.

If anyone gets burned or scalded, immediately hold the burned area under cool running water for 30 minutes and seek medical attention. Dial 000 in an emergency.

Water does not put out fat fires - never throw water on burning oil. Putting water on this type of fire can cause the fire to spread more rapidly and also produce horrific burn injuries.

Access to the microwave should only be allowed with adult supervision, food heated in the microwave may not appear as hot as it actually is.

Don't put knives or other sharp objects into a sink full of water. Someone could reach in and get hurt.

Wipe up any spills on the floor at once with paper towel to avoid slipping on the patch.

Use cooking utensils that will not break like plastic measuring cups, jugs and bowls.
